After leaving construction, Sammy found a new path serving Guatemalan food—and greeting every customer with a smile.

When I met Sammy, his enthusiasm was impossible to miss. From the moment I introduced myself, he was happy to answer my questions and share his story, making me feel like more than just another passerby.

Originally from Guatemala, Sammy spent years working in construction before transitioning to street vending. For the past three years, he's served customers on Alvarado Street near Western Union, usually on weekends, offering traditional Guatemalan food with tostadas among his most popular items.

What Sammy enjoys most isn't just the food—it's the people. Customer service is his favorite part of the job, and it showed throughout our conversation.

Like many vendors, however, the work has become more challenging. Sammy explained that fewer people have been coming out to buy food, and many regular customers have become hesitant during periods of increased immigration enforcement. While busy days once brought around 150 customers, a strong day today is closer to 50.

Even with those challenges, Sammy continues showing up with the same positive attitude. His warmth and willingness to share his story reminded me that behind every food stand is someone who isn't just serving meals—they're building relationships with the community every single day.
