Before becoming a flower vendor, Roberto spent 12 years working in construction. But after suffering a knee injury, he was forced to rethink his future and find a different way to support his family.

Today, he operates Rosales Flores, selling roses and houseplants to customers throughout the community. What began as a career change has grown into something much larger.

When I visited, Roberto immediately stood out. Before the interview even began, he brought over chairs so we could sit and talk. As customers came and went, he shared stories about his family, his daughter, and the journey that brought him into street vending.

His introduction to the flower business came through his wife, who worked at a flower shop in downtown Los Angeles. Over time, Roberto learned the trade and eventually started his own operation.

The work has not always been easy. Despite receiving permission from a nearby property owner to sell in his location, Rosales described facing intimidation and demands for payment from people who believed vendors should pay to remain in certain areas. He also pointed to concerns about violence and theft that many vendors experience while working long hours.

Even with those challenges, Roberto remains focused on serving customers and helping others. In addition to running his business, he now mentors newer vendors who are trying to get started themselves.

For Roberto, the best part of the job is meeting people. Every conversation, every returning customer, and every opportunity to help someone else reminds him why he continues showing up day after day.

After a knee injury ended his construction career, Rosales built a new path selling flowers, serving customers, and mentoring other vendors.
