After years in construction, Juan invested his savings into a neighborhood market while his wife built a dessert stand just outside.
When I walked into Juan's convenience store, he immediately welcomed me, even as customers came and went throughout the afternoon. Between helping people at the register, he happily answered my questions and shared the story behind the business he had spent decades building.
Juan has owned 7 & 8 Market on Westlake Avenue since 2002. Before opening the store, he worked in construction, eventually deciding he wanted the opportunity—and responsibility—of being his own boss. He poured his savings into the business, knowing it would be a major financial risk.
More than twenty years later, the challenges haven't disappeared. Rent remains one of his biggest expenses, alongside keeping the shelves stocked with drinks, snacks, and other essentials. He buys inventory from wholesalers and stores like Costco, constantly balancing costs to keep the business running.
One of my favorite details was just outside the front door. Juan's wife operates Jazz Cakes, a dessert stand set up right in front of the market. Together, they've created two businesses that complement each other, serving the same neighborhood in different ways.
Watching Juan step away from our conversation to help customers—and then return to continue where we left off—said a lot about the kind of business owner he is. After more than two decades, he's still there every day, serving the community he helped build.
