For Zacharias de Jesus, street vending represents an opportunity to work for himself.

Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, he recently began selling churros and fried plantains, bringing familiar flavors to customers throughout the community. While the business is still new, he hopes it will continue to grow over time.

His most popular item is churros, which often attract customers who happen to be passing by. Like many vendors, much of the work happens before the first customer arrives. Preparing ingredients, setting up the stand, and getting ready for the day are all part of the process.

When asked what he enjoys most about the work, Zacharias gave a practical answer: the opportunity to earn money and support himself through his own efforts. Building a business provides a sense of independence that he values.

The work is not without challenges. Zacharias noted that the area can sometimes feel unsafe and mentioned concerns about violence in the neighborhood. Despite those realities, he continues showing up and focusing on his goals.

For Zacharias, the business is still in its early stages. But like many vendors across Los Angeles, he is working to build something of his own one customer at a time.
