At 19, Alexis is gaining her first work experience while saving toward a future career in nursing.

Alexis had only recently graduated from high school when she started working at the food stand.

At 19 years old, this is her very first job. She works as the cashier, greeting customers, taking orders, and helping keep the business running from Wednesday through Sunday, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Talking with Alexis reminded me how many different paths people our age are taking. While some head straight to college, others begin working immediately, gaining experience while figuring out what comes next.

For Alexis, that next step is already clear. She hopes to become a nurse, and sees this job as an important first step toward that goal. Even after only four to six months, she told me she genuinely enjoys the work and the opportunity to interact with customers.

Busy nights can bring around 100 customers, while slower evenings still see about 60 people stop by. Every week, Alexis earns a paycheck while learning the responsibilities that come with her first job.

Meeting Alexis reminded me that everyone's journey into adulthood looks different. Whether through school, work, or both, each person is building toward a future of their own.
